Your mission, should you choose to accept it: develop music literacy that won't self-destruct! The scary word becomes less intimidating and an incredible music teaching tool when presented in listen-sing/play-read-write sequence.
Beginning with steady beat activities using movement, instruments and singing, students progress to improvisation by making up patterns of rhythm and melody through call-and-response. Then they transition to reading and writing, beginning with manipulatives and moving to paper. Finally kids compose their own music and, best of all, get to perform it, taking ownership of their work and easing assessment for the teacher.
