This 6-part elementary and middle school program sequentially lays a foundation of music knowledge and appreciation. In a lively format, with hosts, children, and guest performers, each DVD introduces musical concepts with activities, dramatic skits, demonstrations and experiments.

A downloadable 60-page Teacher's Guide includes outlines, activities, references, resources, glossary, and illustrated index of instruments arranged by families. 30 minutes each.

Choose from these options:

  • Vol. 1: What is Music? (5821) emphasizes the history of music and how it has become a part of our everyday lives. It also introduces the wind instrument family and the concepts of rhythm, tone, melody, harmony and vibration. Screen capture shows a fun experiment demonstrating vibration - your students will want to try this!
  • Vol. 2: Rhythm Basics (5822) introduces beat, tempo, accent, meter as they are explored through performance and listening activities. We meet the percussion family and learn volume dynamics.
  • Vol. 3: Tone, Dynamics, Pitch, Duration, Timbre (5823) covers concepts of loudness, pitch, duration, and timbre, the string instrument family, music tempo variations and binary (AB) form are also discussed in this program.
  • Vol. 4: Scales (5824) emphasizes major and pentatonic scales, musical notation, clef signs and tonality. We also learn to identify the tonic in a given song or major scale, and meet the keyboard instruments
  • Vol. 5: Melody (5825) introduces chant, speech-song, contour, steps and skips, the basics of intervals, staccato and legato. We meet the brass family and learn about styles.
  • Vol. 6: Harmony (5826) helps us understand basic chord theory and the differences between major and minor. We also learn to identify "plucked" instruments.
